How Herbal Teas Can Help With Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

Morning sickness is often the first sign of pregnancy and for many women, the feeling of nausea and vomiting in the morning usually starts around 6 weeks and may only last the first trimester. (first 3 months).

Herbal Teas Australia has some delicious options that can help with morning sickness, help to ease the nausea and be a healthy, pregnancy-safe alternative to caffeinated drinks.

Sipping on Lemon Balm tea, or Peppermint tea can ease the urge to vomit. Ginger root, recognised as a natural relief for motion and travel sickness, is also a good herb to help settle nausea.

For an herbal blend specifically for pregnant women and helping with morning sickness, then our Pregnancy tea is an ideal organic herbal tea option.

Raspberry leaf is one of the safest herbal teas to drink during pregnancy and in our Pregnancy tea, I have mixed Raspberry leaf with the herbs Lemon Myrtle and Lemon Balm.

Raspberry leaf is rich in folic acid, iron and Vitamins A and C. Raspberry leaf has a long tradition of use as it strengthens and tones the tissues of the uterus to make contractions easier. It also helps to check haemorrhaging during labour.

Raspberry leaf’s medicinal properties help to strengthen pelvic muscles and ligaments to help facilitate an easy, normal birth.

Morning sickness is usually triggered by hormonal changes and drinking herbal teas and eating small, frequent meals, staying hydrated and avoiding strong smells and fatty foods can help to manage those early months of pregnancy.

Also safe in pregnancy is Lemon Balm tea. On its own Lemon Balm is a mild herb that can help to alleviate gastrointestinal symptoms, relieve anxiety and is well tolerated with no side effects.

For some women, a tea made with Peppermint leaves can soothe digestive issues like reflux and colic. It is caffeine-free and works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the digestive tract.

Ginger root is a potent, nutrient-dense herb renowned for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti-nausea properties. As an herbal tea, Ginger root effectively relieves digestive issues, morning sickness, and motion sickness.

Despite its name, morning sickness can strike any time of the day so making a healthy herbal tea and sipping throughout the day is recommended.

Note: Rarely is morning sickness so bad that it turns into hyperemesis gravidarum. This is when the nausea and vomiting cause serious fluid loss or loss of more than 5% of pre-pregnancy body weight. Hyperemesis gravidarum might require going to a hospital for treatment to prevent dehydration and malnutrition.
