A Little Ray Of Sunshine – Herbal Teas That Can Help Prevent Sunburn.

Herbal remedies can have a huge impact on the absorption of the “sunshine” vitamin D and the antioxidants contained in many herbs can help protect your skin from sunburn.

During the summer months, we get a healthy dose of the fat-soluble vitamin D by spending a little time outside without sunscreen.

Vitamin D is best acquired through sunshine when the sun’s ultraviolet rays activate a form of cholesterol, which is present in the skin, converting it to vitamin D.

Vitamin D aids in the absorption of calcium from the intestinal tract and the breakdown & assimilation of phosphorus, which is required for bone formation. It also helps to synthesise the enzymes in the mucous membranes that are involved in the active transport of available calcium.

As with most nutrients, it is always best to get them from their natural sources, and vitamin D is no exception. Getting a daily dose of sunshine has been part of a healthy regime for centuries. Because vitamin D is stored in fat cells, we can expect the summer sunshine to supply enough vitamin D to last during winter.

Interestingly, the only vitamin that is not in breast milk is vitamin D. Newborn babies, just like everyone else, were designed to get this vitamin from exposure to natural sunlight. Babies are born with approx. 9-month supply of vitamin D.

Spending time in the sun, preferably in the morning or late afternoon, is safe and beneficial. But treat your tanning as a medicine and control the dosage – frequent, short periods are best.

Preventing sunburn is another issue.

Herbs and foods can help prevent sunburn because the more antioxidants you take, the lower your risk of sunburn.

Antioxidants are any substance that inhibits oxidation, which is a deterioration in a living organism. A good example is when an apple is cut, the browning that appears is oxidation.

Herbs that are high in antioxidants that I use in my herbal teas include Olive leaf, Ginger, Thyme, Basil, Turmeric, Cinnamon and Clove.
